Last week I spent three days teaching art at a nature camp for children; a beautiful spot with woods, river, and field environments for exploring. One day the focus was on building blocks for creating a picture and I gave them 5 categories to look for: colour, shape, texture, size, and value. In pairs they went exploring around the area finding things in nature that fit into these themes. Then we brought the materials back to a central location and they composed pictures based on their category. They would rearrange the bits as they wished and would create new works to look at and think about. It was great fun and I’ll be back there in two weeks to put on another art in nature activity.
