These two images are the first works for the ‘Creative Project’ of my INDS 560 Christian Imagination class at Regent College, UBC campus. I’m working on a series of small pieces (about relationships) in two mediums: applique cameo works and for each cameo a 8” sq. response painting. The leitmotif for the art comes from an old hymn: Count your blessings, name them one by one…

a) The applique works originate from a bag full of cut-out fabric shapes, a parting gift from friends when I moved from Alberta to BC in 2009. I’m stitching the shapes into cameos using guitar wire as the supporting hoop. There are 33 shapes in all and I intend to have at least a dozen completed for the art project.

b) It’s important that each cameo have a response painting (in acrylics) as a way of expressing something of  the unique nature of  the friendship. Creating the art is a reflective and even therapeutic process as I think about my friends one by one through prayer, stitchery, and painting.

    Hi Joy,
Enjoyed going through the blog and seeing what you have done since l last saw you. It was nice to see the completed banners. I love the starfish and the thought process behind it, the painted version makes me feel light and joyful inside. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
