On Thursday I took down my show and had a chance to look again at this painting. Mother and Child in Arch is based on an a doll work I created awhile ago, after I had seen a copy of the Venus of Willendorf at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC in Vancouver. Though the original Paleolithic Venuses were solitary figures, in my piece I felt she needed to be holding something which then progressed into the Mother and Child image. Choosing to use the arch and repeat the image with small variations emphasizes the universality and foundational importance of the Mother and Child archetype in our world.
