I have created my first piece for the upcoming Positively Petite Miniature Exhibition to be held at Place des Arts, Coquitlam, BC from Nov. 17 to Dec. 16, 2011. It’s an annual event for me and last year it was my Seahorses of every Hue that were on display. I have a larger 2d relief Rhino on the go in my studio and that combined with preparing for summer art classes brought forth this miniature (less than 5″ in any direction) papier mâchè piece. In nature the Ox-Pecker bird can be found on the Rhino’s back and having it there seemed to complete the image. Though the work for this exhibit will be eclectic in medium I see a theme of Relationships emerging.
A delightful observation while photographing Bird on a Rhino was the negative created by the bird and the Rhino’s ears is heart shaped which enhances the feeling of friendship between the two creatures. It was what I call a ‘happy accident’ but also comes from years of art practice and that 6th sense that has formed when it comes to composing work.
