Christmas in July

09 Aug

In December 2009 a friend gave us a flowering Christmas Cactus full of blooms. by January the plant had gone dormant and languished on the window sill for awhile. In the spring I put it outside on the deck where it flourished and by July it was again full of flowers. It’s developed it’s own pattern since then; in the fall it comes inside inside where it sits quietly waiting for spring and once outside it blossoms each July. I’ve been planning to paint her for awhile and this is my first attempt. It’s the colour, growth, and sense of a life lived that I wanted to capture in this painting of my Christmas cactus.
