On a trip to the big island of Hawaii last year I was fascinated by the wildness of the the shoreline. The waves would hit the lava rock and stream down it exposing all these wonderfully abstracted, dark forms. The relationship between the heat formed rock and surging water was powerful, even primal and I stayed there as long as I could looking and listening and being awed by the strange perfection of it all. It is something of this indescribable experience that I tried to capture in this work.
