Vasilisa the Painting

11 Apr

A favourite art piece at the “Stories to Tell” exhibit was the painting of Vasilisa and her doll. In the Russian folktale Vasilisa ends up in the woods at Baba Yaga’s house looking for fire. This wild woman of the woods sets a series of impossible tasks for Vasilisa to accomplish and my favourite is when she has to separate the poppy seeds from the dirt. Her doll helps her and in the painting I have a very animated doll jumping up and down in her pocket as the process is begun. In my image I substituted mustard seeds for the poppy seeds and quite like how the picture turned out.
