Mask Making

12 Sep

The post before this was of a design I created for an environmental awareness conference for grades 5 and 6 a few years back. At the same conference I designed a mask making workshop using recycled materials, including the pesky plastic, 6 ring holders for drinking cans. Over the years I’ve had a chance again and again to improve on my initial design. This mask of a Lynx is a prototype for a grade 2 class. Notice that the left side is incomplete so that the students can see the steps used to create the mask. The curriculum being covered included learning about Canadian animals, reading First Nations animal stories, having students create their own animal stories and then acting out their stories with their masks. This particular mask making project continues to be one of my favourite projects to take to schools because of its flexibility for age, subject and art mediums available as well as its inherent environmental message.
