Heart for Joy

31 Aug

Creating hearts for 4 generations of women became more difficult the closer I came to me. What I need to keep in mind is the narrative quality of the work. The art tells a story and in true Maritimer fashion there is embellishment and a quality of myth to every story told no matter what the medium.

The background for this piece is similar to the one created for my Great-Grandmother Roos. No surprise there as her story has inspired me all my life.   The earthy brown colour I chose for my heart is a colour that is plain yet rich in possibilities. The white stone bead in the middle reminds me of a baby tooth or a seed and is a symbol of possibilities.

If I were to create a new heart for myself today there would definitely be more green and a feeling of growth in the piece.
