Heart for Great Grandmother

27 Aug

The first of four silk ribbon hearts, this one was created as a symbol for my Great-grandmother Rhoda Alexander Roos fondly known as Gang. The four hearts are part of a tapestry piece created a few years ago to represent the maternal side of my family going back four generations.

I never met Gang as she lived in Northern Ontario and I in Nova Scotia but her life story definitely affected me and has been an inspiration and a beacon in my life. She was a woman of great faith and deep love and managed a wonderful yet often tragically tainted life with great dignity and fortitude.

I chose as pure and peaceful colour as I could find, teal, for her heart. The white, blue stone sewn in the middle represents her unshakable faith and is a colour that reminds me of the home sewn nightgowns she sent me by way of her daughter’s visits. The surrounding soft, peach colour is to show her dedication to her family and all humanity.
