Birch Trees at Dusk

12 May

The first class of my East meets West painting class began at Place des Arts Art Centre tonight. In honour of the occasion I’m posting one of my favourite watercolours where I combine techniques learned from the Western and Chinese Brush styles of painting.

This picture was done on location, at a lake, as dusk was approaching. The white of the paper worked well for the bark of the trees. The background is added in layers of  wash while details of bark and leaves are added in the calligraphic Oriental style.
